Google Doodle celebrates Frank Kameny Today: Google has dedicated its doodle of today (June 2) to American gay activist Frank Kameny. Frank Kameny is remembered as a man who fought for gay rights in America.


Who was Frank Kameny?

Frank Kameny's full name was Franklin Edward Kameny. He was born on 21 May 1925 in New York, USA. Franklin Edward Kameni enrolled at Queens College to study physics at the age of 15.


Frank Kameni earned his doctorate in astronomy from Harvard University in 1957. In 1957, Frank Kameni worked as a US government astronomer with the Army Map Service but was fired because of his homosexuality.

At the beginning of his career in America, he was fired from his job for being gay. However, he did not give up and kept fighting for his rights. He protested for the first time in 1961 in America for gay rights.


Frank Kameni successfully challenged the American Psychiatric Association's claim of homosexuality as a mental disorder. After which in 1975 the Civil Service Commission removed the restrictions imposed on LGBTQ employees. Frank, who worked as an astronomer in America, has been recognized as an activist for gay rights.


The US government formally apologized to Kameni in 2009 for being fired. In June 2010, Washington DC named 17th Street NW near DuPont Circle as Frank Kameny Way in his honor. Frank Kameni died in 2011 at the age of 86
